The 30th Asia Cross Country Rally (AXCR) concluded in Thailand on August 16, 2025. After nine grueling days covering over 3,000 kilometers, Taiwan’s “i Taiwan Rally Team” showcased remarkable determination, ultimately securing second place in the women’s category and claiming first place in the T1-E class (electric vehicle category) with car No. 127, bringing international honor to Taiwan.

Taiwan’s Performance in Harsh Conditions
This year’s rally was affected by tensions along the Thailand-Cambodia border, leading to the cancellation of several stages and impacting driver morale. Despite losing two opportunities to perform, the women’s team of Chen Yi-Wen and Taichung firefighter Shen Wen-Wen finished a close second, just six minutes behind. Meanwhile, car No. 127—a collaboration between Chen He-Huang and Taiwanese YouTuber “Sun’s Granddaughter”—navigated Thailand’s rain-soaked, muddy, and pothole-filled roads with steady performance, ultimately claiming the T1-E category championship.
The Asia Cross Country Rally is known for extreme weather and challenging terrain. This year, heavy rains caused landslides and erosion in multiple sections, with some vehicles suffering severe accidents and withdrawing on the first day due to slippery conditions. Organizers note that AXCR is modeled after the Dakar Rally and is considered one of Asia’s most demanding off-road events.
Firefighters Compete to Train Through Racing
The participation of Taiwanese firefighters drew considerable attention. Taipei firefighter Chang Chi-Yuan and Tainan firefighter Chen Bing-Yang served as co-drivers for car No. 129, using the off-road rally to practice disaster response and safe driving techniques. On the track, they assisted other drivers in getting unstuck and gained firsthand experience of how harsh terrain can inform future rescue operations. Shen Wen-Wen competed independently, aiming to improve her off-road driving skills and enhance her ability to respond to emergencies.
Promoting Off-Road Safe Driving
Chen He-Huang, Chairman of the Taiwan Safe Driving Association, stated that this participation was not only a competition but also an opportunity to promote “off-road safe driving” and “train-through-racing” concepts for firefighters. He specially invited YouTuber “Sun’s Granddaughter” to join, allowing her to experience both driving and rescue scenarios, hoping to leverage social media influence to raise public awareness of the importance of off-road safe driving.

Since its founding in 1996, the Asia Cross Country Rally has combined extreme sports with long-distance endurance challenges, making it a key annual event in the Asian motorsport calendar. The performance of the Taiwanese team this year once again showcased Taiwan’s potential in electric vehicle technology and off-road driving skills.
